Big Changes Taking Off at Palmerston North Airport
Palmerston North Airport has reached an exciting milestone in its $43 million terminal redevelopment, marking the next step in future-proofing the gateway to the region.
This project is part of a long-term investment in creating a modern, resilient, and welcoming airport for a catchment that includes Palmerston North, Manawatū, Horowhenua, Kapiti, Tararua, Wairarapa, Whanganui, Rangitikei and Ruapehu.
In May, terminal operations relocated to a temporary terminal, located at the eastern end of the existing terminal building. This move allows demolition and construction to commence on the western end of the existing terminal, with the full redevelopment expected to be complete by mid-2027.
The current terminal, built more than 30 years ago, has served the region well, but there are three key drivers for redevelopment of the terminal to occur. These include seismic resilience, and the ability to accommodate both future growth in passenger volumes and the introduction of passenger and hold bag screening if mandated by Government.
While the temporary terminal is more compact, it offers all essential services, including a cafe, and has been well-received by travellers.
Flights will continue as normal throughout construction, with the airport working closely with airline partners to minimise disruption. Travellers are encouraged to allow a little extra time when visiting during the redevelopment period. The airport company has boosted front-line staff numbers with the team available to assist airport users with any queries.
